Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark/Iron Man was the character that kicked off the MCU back in 2008, and what a legacy he left behind. After his ultimate sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame (2019), fans thought that was the last we’d seen of Tony Stark. However, we saw a return of his alter ego in Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) and even in the animated Disney+ series What If…? (2021). Downey Jr.’s future as Iron Man may be uncertain, but the impact he left on the MCU will always be cherished.
Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers/Captain America took the world by storm when he first appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). After passing on the shield to Sam Wilson (Falcon) in Avengers: Endgame, many assumed that Captain America was taking a well-deserved rest. However, Evans made a surprise return as a de-aged Steve Rogers in the 2021’s Loki Disney+ series finale and will reportedly once again assume the role in a new Captain America film.
The next stop in our time-traveling adventure takes us to the galactic conqueror, Thanos (Josh Brolin). After his time in the MCU came to an end in Avengers: Endgame (2019), Brolin went on to appear in several other projects. However, Thanos has not fully disappeared from the Marvel universe and fans received a massive plot update through the Disney+ series, Marvel Studios’ What If…? that explores his character even more.
On a different planet and time zone in the universe, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) last made waves on the big screen in Thor: Love and Thunder (2022). Making brief appearances throughout various Marvel Cinematic Universe films since then, Thor took off on an intimate battle for the rekindling of his godly might that we see continuing this past year. It’s a good reminder for an Asgardian king that true strength doesn’t solely reside in an external object – it belongs within.
Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow earned her both love and heart-break from Marvel fans alike. Her 2021 solo film did more than we suspected – we finally received resolution to her origin story and her mission to save her family. Unfortunately, given events in Avengers: Endgame, we shouldn’t see anything new from Johansson but because this backstory felt exactly like closure we got what was essentially needed in finally getting the origin story of Natasha Romanoff, so Black Widow may have eventually lived on within her friends.
Not all characters are blessed with closure though. From an explosive solo acting adventure in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) to being bitten by Doctor Octopus’ mechanical claws back to New York City where unexpected friendships awaited – we will relive that great love for Tom Holland when Spider-Man 4 is eventually revealed after a four-year void of our favorite teen being busy with press interviews about No Way Home which has been the most epic of adventures until next we revisit.
In the mix of its release, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) is in Disney’s mind currently which would add to our growing speculation that one massive hit during Phase Five on Disney’s release date eventually set in January of 2025 titled ‘WandaVision 2: New Avenger Rising.’
